Department of Nutrition Sciences

 

The Department of Nutrition Sciences started its educational and research activities in 2009 as one of the departments of the Faculty of Health of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences under the name of the Department of Nutrition Sciences and Food Technology. In 2014, the first nutrition students started their study in master's degree (MSc) at this department. Then, the Nutrition Sciences group separated from the Food Technology group in 2015 and continued its educational and research activities as the department of Nutrition Sciences. With continuous follow-up, the Faculty of Nutrition Sciences and Food Technology was established in 2017. In 2021, the department of Nutrition Sciences succeeded in obtaining the approval of the University Development Council in order to train nutrition doctoral students (Ph.D). This department consists of faculty members specializing in community nutrition, clinical nutrition, and diet therapy who are responsible for educating nutrition students in graduate school as well as conducting new research in the field of nutrition.

 

 Mission

  • Improving the health of the community through research, education, and information by studying and teaching nutrition
  • Implementing and evaluating nutrition interventions, including food-based interventions and nutrition education and their impact on individuals, society, and macro policies, and educating nutrition students and future health professionals 

Prophecy

  • Educating postgraduate and doctoral students in the field of nutrition so that they have sufficient theoretical knowledge and practical skills in providing therapeutic, educational, and research services
  •  Theoretical training of medical and paramedical students in the field of principles of nutrition and diet therapy in order to create interdisciplinary interaction and communication between different disciplines in the field of life sciences
  • Achieving the desired state of food and nutrition security with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life of the community

    Vision 

    • Establishment of undergraduate courses in nutrition, master's degree of clinical nutrition and community nutrition
    • Applied research in the field of nutrition with emphasis on community-based research
    • Reducing the burden of chronic non-communicable diseases in the province by institutionalizing proper nutrition at all levels of society

     Aims

    • Launch nutrition retraining courses for alumni in nutrition, nursing, midwifery, medicine and pharmacy
    • Conduct fundamental and applied research in various specialized nutrition fields
    • To investigate the problems of diet therapy in hospitals and to solve existing problems
    • To carry out research related to the food industry in cooperation with the food technology group
    • Expansion of proper nutrition culture in Kermanshah province by holding educational sessions in the community and media

    National and international achievements

    • Conducting joint research and publishing scientific articles in prestigious journals with other domestic and foreign universities
    • Admission and training of foreign students in master's and doctoral degrees in nutrition
    •  Holding national and international workshops and webinars with other universities

    Activities in the diet therapy clinics

    The faculty members of the group work in the morning and evening shifts in their specialized field in the specialized nutrition and diet therapy clinic affiliated to Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences four days a week in the field of patients' diet therapy.

    Guild activities

    Establishment of the Kermanshah Nutrition Association as one of the branches of the Iranian Nutrition Association (ATA)
